Wondering what all the fuss is about? Yoga is great for everyone, but especially great as your body is changing.
Prenatal yoga provides a supportive environment to explore your body and pregnancy as well as actively bond with your baby. It is open to all levels of students in all stages of pregnancy. Connect with your baby and cultivate concentration and relaxation through breathing exercises and carefully selected asanas such as hip openers and centering poses. These amazing tools you acquire throughout your practice will assist you in preparing both mentally and physically for childbirth. Pre-natal yoga helps to address the emotional and physical changes in the body during pregnancy.
And if you've already had your little one...post-natal yoga is designed for rejuvenating the mind and body after birth! This strengthening practice will help to recondition the body while calming the mind. A perfect time for busy moms to rebuild core strength, shed some baby weight and tune into their inner peace.

Have You Seen the Butterflies?
The Butterfly Zone

Fly on over to the Conservatory of Flowers this spring because the butterflies are back, and there are more than ever. The popular exhibit "The Butterfly Zone" returns to San Francisco's beloved greenhouse with double the number of butterflies and special new Night Safaris starting in May, that let you search with flashlights for nocturnal moths.
The exhibit is a unique opportunity to walk amongst a wide variety of brightly colored blossoms while free-flying butterflies flit from flower to flower, drinking nectar and getting covered in pollen. Visitors can see a dazzling array of more than 25 species of colorful butterflies including Zebra Longwings, Julias, Swallowtails and Monarchs. These goodwill ambassadors of the insect world provide a fascinating demonstration of plant pollination in action, and the exhibit offers handy explanations of the critical role pollinators play in the life cycle of plants.
Amazing facts about butterflies abound as well – did you know butterflies taste with their feet? It's true! They use taste receptors in their feet to determine whether or not the flower they are standing on will make a good stop for a drink of nectar. And were you aware that the Monarch migration is over 2000 miles? Scientists still don't know how the last generation of northbound Monarchs understands how to fly all that distance south to the exact spot where their great great great grandparents began.
Night Safaris start at 8 pm on first and third Thursdays of the month May 1 to October 2, 2008 and are included with admission. On these evenings, the conservatory will close at 9:30 pm. Collapse Content

June 15th is Father's Day!
The idea for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909.
Having been raised by her father, William Jackson Smart, after her mother died, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.
In 1926, a National Father's Day Committee was formed in New York City. Father's Day was recognized by a Joint Resolution of Congress in 1956. In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. So Father's Day was born in memory and gratitude by a daughter who thought that her father and all good fathers should be honored with a special day just like we honor our mothers on Mother's Day. 100th Anniversary of Mothers Day
Today marks the 100th Mothers Day! Anna Jarvis “conceived” this holiday to pay respects to her mother in 1908. While never marrying or having any children herself, Anna wanted to create a special day to celebrate and memorialize mothers and all that they do for us. Her idea was to give moms a white carnation, to signify the purity of a mother’s love.
The former Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church is the official shrine to mothers around the world, serving as “a reminder to the accomplishments of these women and to the issues mothers still deal with today, trying to do the balancing act of being everything to everyone,” says Cindi Mason, the shrine’s director. White carnations are given to all mothers who visit today.
Today there are 83 million mothers in the United States. That’s a lot of white carnations!

Today was a very preggo day on The Ellen Degeneres Show, with special guest Jessica Alba dishing on her pink pink pink nursery and all 200 (pregnant!) audience members receiving a Storksak diaper bag! Anemia and Pregnancy
What Is Anemia?
During the last half of pregnancy, your body makes more red blood cells in order to supply enough for you and your baby. Every red blood cell uses iron as its core. Iron cannot be made by your body and must be absorbed from the foods you eat.
Although iron is found in many foods, it is hard to absorb, making it difficult for your body to get enough to meet its needs during pregnancy. When you don't have enough iron in your diet, you make fewer red blood cells, which is called anemia. Iron deficiency anemia is very common and is easy to correct.
Your body also needs a nutrient called folate to make healthy blood cells. Folate is easily absorbed and found in most green vegetables.
What causes anemia?
Poor intake of iron- and folate-rich foods. Increased destruction of red blood cells that can occasionally occur during illness.
What are the signs and symptoms of anemia?
Often, women with anemia don't have specific symptoms. If anemia is severe, you may feel tired and weak.
How can anemia be prevented?
Eat foods rich in iron such as meat, chicken, fish, eggs, dried beans and fortified grains. The form of iron in meat products, called heme, is more easily absorbed than the iron in vegetables. If you are anemic and you ordinarily eat meat, increasing the amount of meat you consume is the easiest way to increase the iron your body receives.
Eat foods high in folic acid, such as dried beans, dark green leafy vegetables, wheat germ and orange juice.
Eat foods high in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits and fresh, raw vegetables.
Cooking with cast iron pots can add up to 80 percent more iron to your food.
Take your prenatal multivitamin and mineral pill which contains extra folate.
Iron and Vitamin Tablets
Because it is difficult to get enough iron from your diet, you may need to take an iron supplement. There usually is enough iron in your prenatal vitamin to prevent anemia, but your provider may prescribe an extra iron pill if you are anemic. If the iron tablet upsets your stomach, take it with a small amount of food. Do not take your iron tablet with dairy products or calcium supplements.
Iron Rich Foods
The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of iron during pregnancy is 30 milligrams. Here are some foods rich in iron.
Foods that provide .5 to 1.5 milligrams of iron:
Chicken, 3 ounces
Green peas, 1/2 cup
Tomato juice, 6 ounces
Broccoli, 1/2 cup
Brussels sprouts, 1/2 cup cooked
Whole wheat bread, 1 slice
Dried apricots, 5 halves
Raspberries, 1 cup
Strawberries, 1 cup
Foods that provide 1.6 to 3 milligrams of iron:
Sirloin steak, 3 ounces
Roast beef, 3 ounces
Lean hamburger, 3 ounces
Baked potato with skin
Kidney beans, 1/2 cup cooked
Lima beans, 1/2 cup cooked
Navy beans, 1/2 cup cooked
Oatmeal, 1 cup cooked
Raisins, 1/2 cup
Foods that provide 3 to 12 milligrams of iron:
Clams, 4 large or 9 small
Oysters, 6 medium
Spinach, 1/2 cup cooked
Fortified cereal, 1 cup
Additional sources of iron:
All kinds of liver (except fish) -- however, liver should not be eaten more than once a week
Lean beef, veal, pork or lamb
Greens, all kinds
Beets
Sauerkraut
Tofu
Lentils
Soy bean flour
Enriched pastas
Unrefined sugars, such as molasses

Why You Can't Sleep
Why is sleep so elusive during pregnancy?
Most mothers-to-be would probably prefer to get as much sleep as possible before the baby arrives. But one of nature's dirty tricks is that just when you're most in need of rest, you can't get it because your back aches, your bladder's full, your belly's big, and your mind is teeming with a host of fears and anxieties concerning your baby's health and birth. Here are some of the reasons those zz's are playing hard to get, and some strategies that might help you:
• Constant need to urinate. Your bladder's capacity has shrunk significantly because of your growing uterus. Drinking as little as possible an hour or two before bedtime may limit late-night trips to the bathroom.
• Queasiness. Since nausea tends to strike an empty stomach, eat a light, high-carbohydrate snack before you go to bed and keep some crackers or rice cakes on your night table so it's easy to grab one in the morning.
• Indigestion or heartburn. Avoid distending your stomach by eating small, frequent meals rather than three large ones. Eat well before bedtime, and sit up after eating. Why is sleep so elusive during pregnancy?
Most mothers-to-be would probably prefer to get as much sleep as possible before the baby arrives. But one of nature's dirty tricks is that just when you're most in need of rest, you can't get it because your back aches, your bladder's full, your belly's big, and your mind is teeming with a host of fears and anxieties concerning your baby's health and birth. Here are some of the reasons those zz's are playing hard to get, and some strategies that might help you:
• Constant need to urinate. Your bladder's capacity has shrunk significantly because of your growing uterus. Drinking as little as possible an hour or two before bedtime may limit late-night trips to the bathroom.
• Queasiness. Since nausea tends to strike an empty stomach, eat a light, high-carbohydrate snack before you go to bed and keep some crackers or rice cakes on your night table so it's easy to grab one in the morning.

Breakfast With Enzo
Finding new things to do with your toddler or preschooler can be challenging. But here is some fun that the whole family can enjoy.
Enzo Garcia, brings his highly acclaimed live family music show, Breakfast with Enzo, to The Presidio Dance Theater every Friday (10 am - noon), beginning in January. Enzo invites you, your friends, family and neighbors, to join him for a morning of genuine, heartfelt sing-along family fun. He'll bring his banjo, guitar, accordion, saw and other surprises. All you need are clapping hands, singing voices and dancing feet. There are two different sets of music each Friday.
Enzo has been performing his Breakfast with Enzo show in the Bernal Heights neighborhood of San Francisco for the past 5 years and has a loyal and growing following of kids and families from around the Bay Area. Breakfast with Enzo was named as one of the Best of SF in 7x7 Magazine in 2007.
